Kedarkantha (not to be confused with the popular Temple Kedarnath) is a 5-day-long trek in Govind Pashu Vihar National Park in Uttarakhand (5 when including the travel days from Dehradun to the base camp and back). Kedarkantha is easily one of the most popular treks in India — popular amongst seasoned trekkers and beginners alike.
There are many reasons why it is a very popular trek to do in the Indian Himalayas. The most important of them is this — the summit climb.
The summit climb of Kedarkantha is a very rewarding one. Right from the base camp of the trek, the summit looms large. As you start your trek in the early hours of the morning and steadily climb up the steep slope, the world opens up around you.
The climb is not easy. The entire stretch is steadily steep. As you get closer to the summit, it gets tricky as well. But the big mountains of the upper Himalayas keep you company until you finally reach the summit.
As you stretch yourself and take in the views of the Himalayas from the summit, you feel a strong sense of satisfaction and accomplishment. This is an unparalleled feeling. Very few treks offer the same adventure, making it popular among beginners for its finest summit climb.
Outside the summit, the trek is also unique for its beautiful clearings. Very rarely you will find stunning clearings on a trek that makes way for some rest spots and beautiful campsites. This trek is filled with clearings on all the different routes. What’s more, the clearings are just at the right locations, giving you beautiful vantage points to appreciate the trek and its views.
The third biggest reason this trek is unique is its beautiful forests. All three routes have beautiful diverse forests that will immerse you. If you are not careful, you will get lost in them (in a good way).

SHORT ITINERARY
- Day 01: Arrival in Sankri via Dehradun.
- Day 02: Sankari to Juda-ka-talab.
- Day 03: Juda-ka-talb to Kedarkantha base camp.
- Day 04: Kedarkantha Peak; Descent to Hargaon camp.
- Day 05: Hargaon to Dehradun.
Tour Plan
- Today’s journey together from Dehradun to Sankri is early in the morning by road.
- It takes us a 7-8 hours drive, during which we witness the Govind Wildlife Sanctuary.
- After an exciting drive through the alpine landscape, we reach and check into a hotel at Sankri village.
- We spend some time enjoying the evening in the village, drinking in the idyllic scenery.
- Dinner is served, and it is now that the trek leader will give you a briefing for the next day. We shall now rest for the big day!
- After a wholesome breakfast, we start the steep climb up the hill to Juda-ka-Talab.
- We have 4 kilometers to cover. The climb is steep since the lake is located at a height of 9,100 feet.
- The path uphill is an image painted in the warm colours of fallen maple and pine leaves.
- A few bridges that penetrate the dense forests await us. We also witness some heart-warming scenes of rural life in this region.
- Juda ka Talab is a vision of wonder under the clear, blue sky. Trekkers can take their time to relish the vegetation and scenery.
- Lunch is provided to the trekkers, A delicious dinner awaits the adventurers too! We will be camping here for the night, under a blanket of stars.
- After breakfast, we begin the route to the Kedarkantha base camp is dotted with small lakes.
- In the evening peppered with fun experiences like group games or an acclimatization walk to familiarize yourself with the area and the terrain.
- Afterward, enjoy some evening snacks and soup. Dinner will be served early as the trek begins tomorrow!
- The night ahead is going to be the trek’s most memorable one. Watch the galaxy unravel its wonders to you, creating an unforgettable picture that no camera can do justice to.
- The temperature at the base camp may drop very low at night. Make sure you have enough layers on to keep yourself warm.
- Today, we shall cover the Kedarkantha peak, and climb 1,250 feet higher than the base.
- After breakfast, we commence in the early hours of 2 or 3 AM so that we can witness the glorious sunrise at the peak.
- The view from the top, however, is what captivates you the most. Thirteen peaks of the Himalayas all bask together in the glory of the sun. All this beauty deserves some admiration.
- Our descent is a beautiful route crossing many frozen streams and more wildlife and flora.
- We stop for lunch at the Kedarkantha base camp Afterward, make our way downhill to the Hargaon base camp.
- The trek from the Hargaon Base Camp to Sankri is relatively simple and takes only a little over four hours.
- It is time to say goodbye to the base camp, but with a lot of memories in your heart and tonnes of trekking experience under your belt.
- Through endless pathways full of oak and maple, we witness the phenomenal view of Har Ki Dun.
- We make our final journey to Dehradun via road, over a 7-8 hour stretch, including breaks for food and refreshments.
- It is the same alpine road that you crossed on your way uphill, but after such a wholesome experience, you feel changed and content. By late evening, we are back in Dehradun. For this time, our journey ends here with lots of happy memories.

- Accommodation: 1 Night in a Hotel / Homestay on a triple/quad sharing basis and 3 Nights accommodation in a tent on a triple sharing basis.

Things to Carry
- Carry Warm T-Shirts.
- Warm light microfleece pullovers, or Thick Fleece.
- Two Trekking Pants that are water-resistant/repellent and having inside lining for extra warmth.
- Keep a good quality Windproof/water-resistant outer shell (jacket) with a proper hood.
- Thermal inner wear (upper and lower).
- Take a Woolen cap, scarf, few pairs of warm fleece gloves.
- Thick woolen socks and regular socks (4-5 pairs).
- Comfortable waterproof Trekking/Hiking shoes that come with a thick sole and high ankles, and a pair of sneakers or sports shoes.
- Raincoat / Poncho, Insulated water bottle.
- A good pair of sunglasses with UV protection with the ability to cut the glare is crucial when traversing through the snow.
- Sturdy walking stick / Trekking pole.
